Orioles tag Blue Jays for 16 hits in series-opening win

July 29 - Cedric Mullins and Coby Mayo belted back-to-back home runs and Adley Rutschman had a big game at the plate in his first game off the injured list as the Baltimore Orioles rapped the visiting Toronto Blue Jays 11-4 on Monday night. Ramon Laureano and Colton Cowser also homered and Jordan Westburg joined Rutschman and Mayo with three hits. Baltimore had 16 hits in the first of four meetings between the teams across three days. Corbin Martin (1-0) was the winning pitcher with 1 2/3 innings of shutout relief. It marked his second victory in the major leagues, and his first since 2019. Bo Bichette had four hits, and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Nathan Lukes each hit home runs for the Blue Jays, who've lost two games in a row for the first time since the All-Star break. The Orioles, who've won four of their last five games, tagged Toronto starter Chris Bassitt (11-5) for six runs in 2 1/3 innings. He had gone 4-0 in his first four starts in July. Baltimore starter Zach Eflin lasted 4 1/3 innings, surrendering four runs on eight hits with one walk and three strikeouts. Lukes and Guerrero Jr. both hit their home runs in the third inning. Rutschman's two-run double in the bottom of the third inning broke a tie to put Baltimore up 5-3. Laureano singled in the next run. Laureano's 15th homer of the season was a two-run shot in the fifth for a 9-4 advantage. Mullins also has 15 long balls this year. Ryan O'Hearn and Mullins also had two hits. Baltimore relievers blanked the Blue Jays across the last five innings. The series pits the AL East Division-leading Blue Jays against the last-place Orioles. The teams meet in a day-night doubleheader on Tuesday. --Field Level Media

Orioles use power to subdue Rays

July 20 - Fueled by three home runs, the visiting Baltimore Orioles salvaged the final game of a three-game series by holding off the Tampa Bay Rays 5-3 on Sunday. Jackson Holliday, Ryan O'Hearn and Alex Jackson went deep for the Orioles, who ended a four-game skid. Gunnar Henderson added a two-run double. Trevor Rogers (3-1) went six innings and allowed just five hits and two runs. The Baltimore lefty walked two and struck out three. Yandy Diaz went 2-for-4 with a run for the Rays. Danny Jansen homered and scored twice, and Junior Caminero had two hits and one RBI. Holiday gave the Orioles a 1-0 lead after he deposited Rays starter Ryan Pepiot's second pitch of the game over the fence in right-center. The second baseman also played a pivotal role in a three-run third inning, which began with Jackson homering against his former team. He worked a walk after facing an 0-2 count and scored on Henderson's two-bagger that made the lead 4-0. Pepiot (6-8) went six innings. He gave up six hits and a walk while striking out eight. However, half of the hits off the righty were longballs, which led to him giving up five earned runs, one off his season worst. The Rays scratched a run across in the ninth off Baltimore's Felix Bautista, but had a chance for more as the Orioles closer was erratic in making his first appearance since July 10. Taylor Walls singled to score Jansen. Bautista walked three and eventually loaded the bases to give Caminero a chance to walk it off for the Rays. However, the righty recovered after going down 3-0 to get the All-Star slugger on strikes and lock down his 19th save of the season. Tampa Bay center fielder Chandler Simpson entered Sunday with the longest active hitting streak at 18 games, but he saw it snapped after going 0-for-5. That included a first-pitch pop-out in the ninth inning off Bautista as the potential tying run. Sunday's game featured a rain delay of two hours, 36 minutes after the sixth inning. --Field Level Media

Kyle Stowers hits 3 homers, drives in 6 runs to lead Marlins past the Orioles 11-1

All-Star Kyle Stowers had his first three-homer game and drove in six runs against his former team, leading the Miami Marlins to an 11-1 win over the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday. Stowers is the first Marlins player to hit three homers in a game since Brian Anderson on Sept. 18, 2020, in the second game of a doubleheader against Washington. The 27-year-old left fielder also joins fellow Marlins Mike Lowell (2004) and Cody Ross (2006) in accomplishing the feat. Ramón Laureano homered for Baltimore, which has lost consecutive games for the first time since July 1-2. Stowers led off the second inning with a shot to right against Brandon Young (0-4) to open the scoring. An inning later, he sent Young's first-pitch curveball 398 feet for a two-run blast to right-center. In the fifth, Stowers worked a 2-2 count before homering over the scoreboard in right. The 27-year-old had a base hit in the seventh and added an RBI single in the eighth for his first career five-hit game. It was Stowers fourth multi-homer game of the season. At the break, he has career highs in home runs (19) and RBIs (54). Baltimore selected Stowers in the second round of the 2019 amateur draft. He debuted in 2022, and the Orioles sent him to Miami at last year's trade deadline as part of a package for pitcher Trevor Rogers. Otto Lopez followed Stowers' homer in the third with a solo shot–the second time Miami hit consecutive home runs this season. Miami starter Eury Pérez (3-2) allowed three hits and struck out six in seven shutout innings. Young surrendered a career-high seven runs in 4 1/3 innings. The game was delayed 1 hour 38 minutes at the start due to rain. Key moment: Stowers' third homer made it 7-0 and ended the day for Young, who gave up more home runs (four) than he had in his first five starts combined (three). Key stat: Stowers is the first player to hit three home runs against Baltimore since Toronto's Bo Bichette in the second game of a doubleheader on Sept. 5, 2022. Up next: Miami hosts Kansas City after the All-Star break. RHP Charlie Morton (5-7, 5.18 ERA) starts Friday when Baltimore opens a series at Tampa Bay.

Marlins Outfielder Kyle Stowers Hits Three Homers Against Orioles

Miami Marlins left fielder Kyle Stowers has hit a career-high three home runs in Sunday's game against the Baltimore Orioles. The 27-year-old is the fourth player in Marlins history with a three-homer game and the first since Brian Anderson did it on Sept. 18, 2020, in the second game of a doubleheader against Washington. Mike Lowell (2004) and Cody Ross (2006) also did it. Stowers, whom Baltimore selected in the second round of the 2019 amateur draft and traded to Miami last July as part of a package to land pitcher Trevor Rogers, homered in all three plate appearances against Os starter Brandon Young. Stowers, who earned his first All-Star selection earlier this month, lofted a 1-1 pitch to right-center to lead off the second inning. The next inning he lined a first-pitch curveball to right-center to make it 4-0. After working a 2-2 count in the fifth, Stowers pulled a two-run shot over the scoreboard in right to extend the lead to 7-0. It is Stowers' fourth multi-homer game this season.
